Taras Matla is an arts leader, museum administrator, and curator with more than twenty-five years of experience across prominent cultural institutions. His work considers how context and narrative shape interpretation, drawing on decades of engagement with visual culture and the stories that give artworks their meaning.
Earlier in his career, he held positions at institutions including The J. Paul Getty Trust and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, contributing to major curatorial and collections-based initiatives. He currently serves as Director and Chief Curator of the University of Maryland Art Gallery, where he oversees the museum’s artistic vision, programming, and overall institutional stewardship. Outside of his university role, he provides independent consulting services to artists, organizations, and private clients, fully separate from his work at the university.
He holds degrees from California State University, Long Beach, and the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts).
